A few areas of treatment speciality…

  • Expressing emotions in a non-verbal way can reduce feelings of anxiety and stress. The calming and meditative process can refocus the mind on the present moment and fade worries about the past or future. Such coping skills can further reduce anxiety symptoms.

  • Creating a safe and creative outlet for self-expression can build mood-lifting self-esteem skills to restore a sense of control over their lives. Using art materials and techniques, art therapy can facilitate a deeper understanding of oneself and provide a sense of connection and support.

  • Individuals on the autism spectrum are free to process and express emotions in a non-verbal way. Guided creative activities can develop self-awareness, social skills and provide a comforting sense of structure and routine for people who may struggle with change or unpredictability.

  • Art therapy encourages the exploration of thoughts related to food, body image, and self-esteem. Art therapy can aid the development of a positive self-image, bodily awareness, reduction of food-related anxiety, and nurture coping skills to manage emotions and cravings.

  • Survivors of domestic abuse can express and explore their emotions in a safe and supportive environment and begin to heal and regain their empowerment. Art therapy can provide a sense of community and connection for survivors who may feel isolated or alone in their experiences.

  • Art therapy can strengthen attachment and bonding between adoptive or foster parents and their children. By engaging in art-making activities together, they can build positive and nurturing relationships, enhance communication, and develop a deeper understanding of each other. Overall, art therapy can allow individuals to heal from past trauma, build resilience, and create new, positive experiences.

  • Substance abuse can leave individuals feeling powerless and out of control. Using art materials, individuals can create in a safe, controlled and contained space in order to explore difficult emotions and can choose to share as much or as little as they feel comfortable with.

  • Art therapy can be a complementary treatment alongside medication and other therapies to support overall wellness and recovery. Connecting with emotions, thoughts, and perceptions can strengthen a sense of confidence, social and communication skills.

  • Dyadic art therapy can be highly effective for parents and children who want to process issues such as communication and behavioural difficulties, attachment issues, trauma, emotional and mental health concerns, in a safe and supportive environment.

  • Trauma can often leave individuals feeling numb or disconnected from their emotions, making it difficult to communicate their experiences or feelings. Art therapy provides a safe and non-threatening outlet for full self-expression in a way that feels safe and controlled.

  • Through art-making, individuals can process and work through their grief, connect with their feelings, and find new ways to cope with their loss. Art therapy can also provide a sense of control and empowerment, as individuals are able to visually represent their feelings and experiences in a tangible way. Additionally, the therapeutic relationship and support from the art therapist can help individuals feel heard, validated, and less alone in their grief journey.

  • Interpreting images that represent an individual’s relationships and attachment experiences can foster a deep understanding of attachment patterns. The trusted therapeutic relationship can be a corrective emotional experience, promoting secure attachment and healing past trauma.

Lego Therapy

Lego therapy is a form of play therapy that uses Lego blocks to facilitate social interaction and communication skills in children and adolescents. Although it is not technically a form of art therapy, it can be used in conjunction with art therapy to promote creativity and self-expression.

Lego therapy typically involves groups of 2-4 children or adolescents working together to build a Lego model, with each child taking on a specific role in the construction process. The therapist acts as a facilitator, helping the group to work together and communicate effectively. The therapist may also use Lego therapy to address specific therapeutic goals, such as improving social skills or managing emotions.

Incorporating Lego therapy into an art therapy session can provide additional opportunities for creative expression and social interaction, as well as promoting problem-solving and fine motor skills. However, it is important to note that Lego therapy should only be used by qualified professionals who have received training in its use.
